Minutes of October 15, 2014 Cortland Community Library Board Meeting
Present:  Mary Benson, Martha Carter, Victoria Haier, Harlan Hawkins, Marie Kornischuk and director, Barb Coward.

The meeting was called to order at 7:02 pm.  The meeting was held in Cortland Library.
The motion to approve the minutes of September 17, 2014 was made by Marie
Kornischuk and seconded by Martha Carter.  Voice vote and all approved.

The September Treasurers Report and Expenditures were examined and discussed.   Victoria Haier moved to approve and Martha Carter seconded the motion.  A voice vote was taken and all approved.

Librarians Working Together is planning a staff training for March 2015.  The topic will be understanding and dealing with mental illness, which affects up to 1 in 5 people.

Malta Library has begun their “1,001 Books Before Kindergarten” program and shared a copy of their program handout.  This will be used as a practical reference for our staff as we develop the Cortland Library version.

Mrs. Coward reported that the LSTA quarterly report has been submitted.   We are waiting for the results of an application to the DeKalb county Community Foundation for library furniture (craft tables & junior fiction book cases).

Staff meetings will wait until Mrs. Coward returns from vacation in November.
Harlan will present “fire safety” at a future date.

The Levy for 2015-2016 was presented and discussed.  Victoria Haier moved, seconded by Harlan Hawkins, that the Levy be approved as presented.

The total Levy requests $226,000.

The Fund breakdowns are:
Library Fund            $170,000
IMRF                           $15,000
Op & Main.                $14,000
Audit                              $2,000
Tort Immunity          $10,000
Social Security          $15,000

Lack of space for book sale donations was discussed. Some are now in the Town Hall basement.


There was no new information on the Edge Initiative.


Marie Kornischuk asked to see our last strategic plan, as a frame of reference for creating one for the next few years.  Victoria Haier agreed that would be a first step.

Committee of the Whole meetings will be scheduled after Thanksgiving.

The huge success of “Star Wars Reads Day” on October 11 and the 40 + patrons who walked with us in the parade, was reported.  The library Star Wars float, designed by Lindy Geise & her husband, and built by Danielle Bryant, her family , the Geises, and Morkens, won FIRST PLACE! 

The auditors reported that changes are coming to the accounting requirements for IMRF.  IMRF will send the required information with its financial reports next year. 

Mrs. Coward discussed lack for funding for the new director’s position.  Mrs. Coward will remain on the job thru 2015.

Victoria Haier moved to adjourn, seconded by Marie Kornischuck. 
All approved.  Meeting adjourned at 7:51 PM.
